Researchers from Japan’s ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories have developed new brain analysis technology that can reconstruct the images inside a person’s mind and display them on a computer monitor, it was announced on December 11. According to the researchers, further development of the technology may soon make it possible to view other people’s dreams while they sleep.

Однако, несмотря на значительное число перепечаток, ни одного серьёзного источника мне обнаружить не удалось. В ходе поиска, впрочем, нашлось то, что, по-видимому, имелось примерно в виду:

We show that these receptive-field models make it possible to identify, from a large set of completely novel natural images, which specific image was seen by an observer. [...] Our results suggest that it may soon be possible to reconstruct a picture of a person's visual experience from measurements of brain activity alone.

Так что шапочку из фольги, возможно, и не стоит прятать слишком далеко.
